Imagine losing access to clean water. For 2.2 billion people, or over 25% of the world's population, that's already the case. As the effects of climate change continue to disrupt weather patterns and worsen drought globally, that staggering number will only climb. What does this mean? Well, for one, it's crucial to manage the water we still have, and find lasting ways to protect it. At Humanscale, that includes the water used by communities we call home.

Without care and attention, our presence in these areas would drain significant amounts of water that could otherwise be used by local residents. That's why when it comes to our production water, we stick to what's given to us and not a single drop more. In other words, our facilities run on 100% rainwater for manufacturing.

Our flagship facility in Piscataway features a rain harvesting device on its roof – with room for overflow. The connected water system runs on a closed loop, which means water is continually reused, with additional water added from further rain capture to account for evaporative loss.

In Nogales, Mexico, our facility exists within a dry desert ecosystem. This only makes the need for responsible water use even greater. The rainwater capture device on the roof collects enough rain during monsoon season to power production for the rest of the year. On top of that, it also collects enough to help cool the entire facility through the harsh summer months. In addition, the employees at our Nogales facility are given low-flow showerheads to take home, which further helps conserve the city's water supply.

When considering our impact on the communities we work in, we seek to go beyond traditional harm reduction and give back as much as possible. Our commitment to rainwater use, along with community programs like showerhead dispersal, highlight this ethos and demonstrate that conservation demands bold, new ideas before time – and water – run
